OUR STORY

Time for change

The Ancient Tree Nursery is a registered Community Interest Company. It exists for conservation objectives: any profits will be reinvested into the business.

We started out last summer, making contact with landowners and stakeholder organisations. Everyone we approached was enthusiastic about the idea and almost immediately we gained interest from two of the largest environmental charities, the Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust.

ABOUT US

Dr Nick Atkinson

Nick has a lifetime of experience in conservation. He has worked in government, academia, NGO and corporate sectors, but all roads have led back to trees.

Keenly interested in both ancient trees and trees outside woods, he realised that current tree planting policy and practice are potentially storing up trouble for the future.

ABOUT US

Dr Helen Atkinson

Helen is a fungal biologist and educator. She is passionate about nature and sees the ATN as a very direct way to do some good.

She is keen to engage people and communities with our work, seeing it as a great way to communicate the importance of trees to us all.

Starting small but dreaming big

From the start we have seen this as a collective effort. Without the goodwill and support of others it will just be another tree seed project. That’s why we’re placing so much emphasis on working with like-minded people, not only in the practical side of things but also to engage with and influence policymakers.
